Monocle Quality of Life Conference 2023: Munich

Still buzzing after returning from last weekend’s Monocle Quality of Life Conference in Munich. This truly unique experience with nearly 200 delegates from around the globe in an intimate setting listening in on some of the world’s top experts, execs, creatives, public servants and professionals at Allianz HQ bordering the venerable Englischer Garten.

Speakers ranging from entrepreneurs manufacturing innovative micro e-cars, such as Merlin Ouboter (son of the inventor of the modern kick scooter) of Microlino, to heads of offices of public realm like Ya-Ting Lei of NYC, to young, dynamic mayors (for contrast and commonality) like Matúš Vallo of Bratislava and Eric Johnson of Dallas respectively, to Carsten Spohr, the CEO of Lufthansa, discussing air travel now and in the future.

There was an overwhelming consensus amongst the speakers and delegates alike that the event lent a convivial energy throughout the proceedings, whether sharing Negroni Sbagliato at the famous Schumann’s Bar on the formal Hofgarten, at the main HQ auditorium, over a four-course dinner at Gallerie Thomas, or at Club Bayerischer Hof, where many of us celebrated into the early hours. You were an absolute legend if you made the 8:30am 5k run the following day. I, for one, did not. -HD. Photos ©Manuel Nieberle, 2023

ENRICO MARONE CINZANO AT QATAR MUSEUMS HOSTING ROSSANA ORLANDI'S RO'S PLASTIC PRIZE

Sustainable furniture designer Enrico Marone Cinzano has been selected as one of Rossana Orlando’s Ro Prize Finalists for 2022.

DONDOLO by Enrico Marone Cinzano

As he continues on his passionate mission of sustainability through art and design, designer Enrico Marone-Cinzano has created a clever "complication" in the form of "Dondolo" (Italian for rocking chair).  This piece, composed of car parts and various mechanisms that translate into comfort, place, and innovation has an immediate and powerful visual impact.

The Designer's Description:

Considering I come from Torino, the car manufacturing capital, it only made sense that at some point I would extend my work to the automobile industry. I went scavenging through car junk yards and found that the aftermath of that industry produced a wealth of beautiful and extremely well made products which could be re-utilized into making furniture, hence the birth of 'Dondolo'. It's a rocking chair with a foot in the past and one in the future. Still benefitting from the factory-issue moving parts, the original leather Alfa Romeo 166 seat reclines and heats at will, powered by an eco-friendly gel based battery which can be charged with any power outlet. By means of two periscopic arms, it has the added comfort of providing a swinging, retractable work table to rest your laptop, and an efficient dimmable warm-toned LED light, housed in what was a beautiful metal FIAT 500 vintage headlight. I am adding an extra layer to the proverbial cake, by lining the bottom of the retractable table with a EMF and radiation protective fabric, which will mitigate the damage one incurs from using a computer at such proximity to the body. Lastly, for some finishing touches and to replace the molded plastic parts, I used hand embossed recovered leather from the furniture industry, replicating the pattern of car tyre marks, which look almost like natural crocodile patterns. Everything was sourced and made in Turin itself. A complex project but one that made alot of sense: back to my roots.

One of our favorite architecture and design publications is Mark.  In issue #57 Monica Zerboni investigates OMA’s Prada Foundation, the Mother of all Epicenters, where all Prada culture is created, tested, perfected and exhibited.  Acting virtually as a museum on the old industrial side of Milan, the Fondazione is also a bastion of art, media and creativity.  This among other projects by Herzon & de Meuron, Projekt Praga, Swedish firm Schmitt Hammer Lassen's public library in Aarhus, their concert hall in Malmö, L.A. architect Eric Owen Moss' Pterodactyl building, Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s new Broad Museum are feature in the August-September issue.
